Themed "The World's Fair of Software," the event aims to capture the innovation of other World's Fairs by bringing together the brightest minds in software development.
As the tenth GitHub Universe, the event deserved a look that both celebrates this milestone and pushes the boundaries of their original design. We set out to create a visual system that embodies the brand's progressive spirit and the developer community.
As a Senior Designer on BUCK’s team, I explored early concepts and creative routes before designing the brand system. This included co-designing the logotype, defining the typographic and layout systems, and developing the brand guidelines.
To kick off the exploration phase, our Art Director Estefan Richter led a hands-on workshop focused on the themes of progress and code. Through a series of structured exercises and prompts, the team was encouraged to experiment collaboratively.
We explored shapes, colors, and gestures using physical materials such as paper cut-outs, glue, ink, Legos, and play-doh. GitHub’s scalable grid played a key role in translating these tactile explorations into a digital framework.
Building on the outcomes of the workshop, we transitioned into digital exploration, developing early studies of silhouettes and forms. This process ultimately led to the concept Monuments of Progress.
We developed guidelines that combine the existing brand elements with new ones, including shapes, colors, fonts, and logos—all influenced by features in code.
Central to our concept were the Monuments of Progress, an evolution of our 2D shape library from the previous year.
These monuments, whether they’re standalone or hero visuals, embody the brand’s key pillars and feature icons, symbols, mascots, and playful insider winks unique to GitHub.
BUCK's team brought these monuments to life through animations for GitHub’s event assets and online campaign, and even extended them into an intro film that lit up their event stages.
